At Banbu, we create natural, effective, and toxin-free cosmetics. Many of the questions we receive about our products are related to the ingredients they don't contain. However, it's also very important to know what they do include, and in most cases, this often goes unnoticed.
Natural cosmetics are not only safe, but also conscious and effective. More and more people are choosing to switch to them because these products are genuinely beneficial for the skin. If there are any doubts, in this article we explain which ingredients we avoid in the formulation of our products, our natural alternatives, and why they are a better choice.
Which ingredients do we not use in the formulation of our cosmetics?
Although the list of ingredients we don't use is much more extensive, today we will highlight the ingredients that can have the worst consequences for health. It's important to remember that many of them act as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can alter the hormonal balance of our body and cause infertility, diabetes, neurological development problems, thyroid dysfunctions, and even increase the risk of certain types of cancer.
Some of the compounds we do not use in the formulation of our products are the following:
- Parabens
Parabens are chemical compounds that are often used as preservatives, as they help prevent the appearance of bacteria that can spoil the product over time. However, they are considered endocrine disruptors, and various studies have linked them to breast cancer, which has generated growing concern.
- Silicones
Silicones are synthetic compounds made of silicon and oxygen, widely used in cosmetics for their texture and their ability to instantly improve the appearance of hair and skin. However, that “immediate softness” comes at a price. By forming a film on the surface, silicones can clog pores and prevent the skin from breathing and absorbing nutrients. On the scalp, their continuous use hinders natural regeneration, affecting hair balance and health.
- Harsh Sulfates
Sulfates are salts derived from sulfuric acid combined with fatty acids, and are commonly used in cosmetics for their detergent and foaming power. Although effective for cleaning, their aggressive action can damage the skin's natural barrier, causing irritation and dryness. Their continuous use has been associated with problems such as atopic dermatitis, especially in sensitive or reactive skin.
- Phthalates
Phthalates are chemical compounds primarily used to make plastics more flexible. The problem is that they are not permanently integrated into the material, so they can easily be released into the environment throughout the product's life cycle. They are included in the list of endocrine disruptors, and their exposure has been linked to fertility problems, as well as toxic effects on organs such as the liver and kidneys.
- Petroleum Derivatives
Petroleum derivatives are hydrocarbons used in cosmetic products for their ability to form a layer on the skin. While they can give an immediate sensation of softness and hydration, what they actually do is draw moisture from the inside to the surface, which can lead to more dryness in the long term. Additionally, by creating an artificial barrier, they clog pores and prevent the skin from breathing or eliminating toxins normally.
- Formaldehyde Derivatives
Formaldehyde is characterized by being a colorless, pungent-smelling, and highly flammable substance, and although its use in cosmetics has decreased, it can still be found in some products as a preservative. Various studies have shown that this compound can cause skin irritations, eczema, and even ulcers, in addition to affecting the respiratory tract. Its prolonged exposure is classified as carcinogenic, making it a high-risk ingredient for health.
- Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol is a broad-spectrum synthetic preservative, used for its effectiveness against bacteria and yeasts. Various investigations have indicated possible adverse effects associated with its use, such as liver toxicity, alterations in the central nervous system, especially in children, and possible reproductive problems. For these reasons, its safety is increasingly being questioned in the field of healthy cosmetics.

What ingredients do we use to replace them?
At Banbu, we use only natural ingredients that are respectful of health. We have a wide variety of ingredients that we do use, each one designed to address problems and characteristics of different people. Some of the ingredients we use are the following:

Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, making it ideal for sensitive or irritated skin.
- Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil is an excellent emollient that is easily absorbed, mimicking the skin's natural sebum. It helps balance oil production, moisturize without a greasy feel, and protect the skin from dehydration. It is also known for its antioxidant properties and its ability to improve skin elasticity.
- Tocopherol (Vitamin E)
Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant that protects skin cells from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. In addition to its protective effects, it helps retain moisture and has anti-inflammatory properties, improving skin regeneration and providing firmness.
- Pomegranate Seed Extract
This extract is a powerful natural antioxidant that protects the skin from damage caused by pollution and premature aging. Additionally, it has regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to repair and revitalize the skin.
- Kaolin
A natural clay used for its absorbent and purifying properties. It helps cleanse the skin deeply, removing impurities and toxins, and also regulates sebum production.
- Sunflower Oil
This oil is light and rich in essential fatty acids and vitamin E. Its main function is to hydrate and protect the skin, strengthening the skin barrier. In addition, it has antioxidant properties that help protect against environmental damage and keep the skin healthy.
- Betaine
Betaine is a natural compound derived from plants such as sugar beet. It stands out for its ability to intensely hydrate, balance the skin's moisture level, and reduce irritation, providing a feeling of softness and comfort.
- Vegetable Glycerin
It is a natural emollient derived from vegetable oils that helps to soften and hydrate the skin. It also acts as a conditioning agent, improving the product's texture and facilitating its application without leaving a greasy feeling.
