How do I prepare it? It doesn't come as a liquid
That's right: the styling gel comes in powder form and you prepare it yourself by mixing it with water. This is what allows it to be free of preservatives and plastic packaging: 40 g of powder is equivalent to 200 ml of conventional gel. Follow the ratio on the label and let it sit until it gels before using it.
My hair feels hard or crunchy, what should I do?
It is almost always a matter of the mixture, not the product. If you have used too little water, the gel becomes too concentrated and turns crunchy even if you apply a small amount: prepare the next batch more diluted. And there is a second step that many people skip: when the hair is completely dry, the gel forms a stiff layer that needs to be broken by running your hands through the curls. That is where the soft definition appears; without that gesture, it stays like a hair gel effect.
On wet or dry hair?
Soaking wet, never dry or half-damp. Distribute the product, form the curl by squeezing from the ends towards the roots, and let it air dry or use a diffuser on a low heat setting. More tips in how to define your curls.
Is it suitable for the Curly Girl Method?
Yes. It is formulated without sulfates, without silicones, and without drying alcohols, which are the three groups that the method rejects. Regarding why sulfates are the most questioned ingredient: are sulfates really bad?.
How long does it last and how do I store it?
Each jar of powder provides the equivalent of 200 ml of gel, so it goes much further than it seems when you open it. Once prepared, store it in a clean container, such as the reusable aluminum bottle, and prepare amounts that you will use in a few weeks: since it does not contain strong preservatives, it does not last indefinitely.
Does it provide volume or weigh hair down?
It is designed to hold and define without weighing hair down, but it is not a volumizing product: if what you are looking for is body at the roots, this will not do that. Its job is to maintain the shape of the curl and control frizz throughout the day.
