What negative health effects do endocrine disruptors have?

by Verónica Díez Lantarón on Nov 10, 2025
¿Qué efectos negativos en la salud tienen los disruptores endocrinos?

Although more and more is known about how harmful they are, human exposure to endocrine disruptors continues to be one of the biggest concerns for public health. These toxic substances are found in many everyday products and places, from cosmetics to food packaging, leading to almost constant contact with them. If no action is taken, this continued exposure can lead to serious long-term health problems.

Endocrine disruptors have the ability to interfere with the functioning of the body's hormonal system, which can lead to adverse effects. Fortunately, there are natural and safe alternatives that help reduce exposure to these compounds. In this article, we tell you how they act, what negative effects they have, and how you can avoid them.

What are endocrine disruptors and how do they act?

Before knowing what endocrine disruptors are, it is important to understand how the endocrine system works. This is a network of hormones, glands, and receptors that regulate vital body functions, such as growth, reproduction, neurological development, and even mood. Within this system, the most important functions are performed by hormones, as they act as messengers traveling through the blood and connecting different organs, which can act as transmitters or receivers of information.

Conversely, endocrine disruptors are exogenous substances, meaning they are not produced by the body itself. What these toxic substances do is alter the communication network by mimicking the role of hormones. They can interfere with this process in many different ways, from blocking receptors to increasing or decreasing natural hormone levels.

Exposure routes to these compounds are multiple, ranging from food intake and inhalation to skin contact. In addition, the periods when one is most vulnerable to them are developmental stages, such as childhood, puberty, and gestation.

Negative health effects of endocrine disruptors

Based on recent scientific reviews, endocrine disruptors are associated with multiple adverse effects on the body's health. One aspect that makes them especially complex and dangerous is that even in low doses they can have negative consequences.

One of the systems most affected is the reproductive system. Disruptors can influence fertility, causing many women to experience menstrual cycle irregularities or early menopause. They have also been linked to growth anomalies or low birth weight.

The brain and central nervous system can also be affected. Particularly in early stages of development, disruptors can alter key hormonal functions for proper neurological development.

Another system that is very sensitive to hormonal signaling and that endocrine disruptors can easily alter is the thyroid. Having thyroid problems can have consequences for development.

However, the most negative effect is that endocrine disruptors can promote the development of certain cancers, such as breast cancer.

Furthermore, it is not only that they can harm our health for decades after exposure, but they can also affect our future generations. Some endocrine disruptors have epigenetic effects that could be inherited generation after generation.

How to reduce the risk

It seems difficult, but the change is in our own hands. Once you know all the negative consequences, it's about reducing exposure to these substances through changes in your routine.

For example, you can avoid plastic food containers, not heat food in plastic containers, increase the consumption of fresh and well-washed fruits and vegetables to reduce pesticide residues, or maintain adequate ventilation at home.

However, the simplest step, and the one most people usually start with, is changing their cosmetic and personal care products for safe ones free of phthalates, parabens, and any suspicious substances.

At Banbu, all our products are safe, natural, and do not contain toxic ingredients, so your health and body will be protected with their use. Taking this small step and starting to use our natural cosmetics can have a very positive impact on your health.

Changing habits for better health

Although avoiding endocrine disruptors may seem like a challenge, it is fundamental to gradually change habits to avoid constant exposure to them. Their ability to alter the body's hormonal system makes them risk agents for multiple reproductive, neurological, and thyroid diseases, and even for some cancers.

Knowing what they are, understanding their effects, and adopting habits to reduce exposure can make a difference. Our consumption and lifestyle decisions can tip the balance towards a lower toxic load and better health.
