For a long time, I also didn't connect cosmetics with hormonal health.
Not because I didn't care about taking care of myself, but because—like so many people—no one had ever taught me to look there. A cream was a cream. A deodorant was a practical everyday gesture. Something external, superficial, without much relevance beyond aesthetics.
That way of understanding cosmetics began to falter when I started to delve into how the human body really works. And, above all, when I began to understand the central role the hormonal system plays in our health.
Why the hormonal system is so important for our health
Hormones are the body's great coordination system. They don't make noise, they aren't immediately noticeable, but they are behind almost everything that happens in our body. They regulate fertility, the menstrual cycle, thyroid function, metabolism, energy, stress response, development, and growth. They are chemical messengers that constantly travel, giving very precise instructions.
And they do it in a very specific way: in extremely small quantities, systemically, and with effects that last over time. That's why the hormonal system is so effective... and also so vulnerable.

The endocrine system is not prepared for constant interference
Unlike other body systems, the endocrine system is not designed to tolerate constant interference. It functions as a delicate network, where small alterations can generate amplified effects elsewhere. Furthermore, it does not respond linearly: more dosage does not always mean more effect. In some cases, very low doses can have significant impacts, especially if maintained over time.
Life stages where hormonal health is most sensitive
Added to this is something key: there are times in life when the hormonal system is especially sensitive. Pregnancy, childhood, and puberty are stages in which hormones not only regulate functions but are literally "programming" the future development of the organism. Any interference at these times can leave a mark that does not always manifest immediately, but years later.
What are endocrine disruptors and why are they so concerning?
It is in this context that science began to focus on something that until recently was hardly explained outside of highly specialized fields: the influence of the chemical environment on the endocrine system.
Organizations such as the World Health Organization and the Endocrine Society have been warning for years about the presence of substances capable of interfering with hormonal function. These are called endocrine disruptors. Substances that do not act like a classic toxicant, which do not cause an immediate or obvious effect, but rather interfere with the body's chemical language.
How endocrine disruptors act in the body
What makes endocrine disruptors particularly complex is the way they act. They do not function like a classic toxicant that causes immediate and obvious damage. Their impact is usually progressive, silent, and cumulative.
Substances that mimic our natural hormones
Some of these substances can mimic our natural hormones. Their structure is similar enough to activate the same receptors as hormones like estrogens or androgens. The body receives the signal and "believes" that the hormone has arrived, even if it hasn't. This can activate hormonal processes when they shouldn't, keep signals active longer than necessary, or alter the natural rhythm of the endocrine system. In estrogen-sensitive tissues, for example, this type of constant stimulation has been linked to chronic inflammatory processes, menstrual cycle alterations, or abnormal tissue proliferation.
Substances that block hormone receptors
Other substances act by blocking hormone receptors. The real hormone is present in the body, but it cannot perform its function. From the outside, even in an analytical test, hormone levels may appear normal, but at a functional level, the signal does not arrive. This mechanism helps to explain why many people present clear symptoms—fatigue, cycle alterations, fertility problems, or thyroid dysfunction—even though "everything looks fine" in conventional tests.
Alterations in hormone production, transport, and elimination
But the interference is not limited to the moment when the hormone binds to its receptor. Some endocrine disruptors alter how hormones are produced, how they are transported through the blood, how they are activated, or how they are eliminated. A hormone can be correctly manufactured but not converted into its active form; or it can remain in the body for too long, altering the general balance. The endocrine system depends on a very precise chain of processes, and modifying just one of those steps can disrupt the whole system.
There is also a particularly relevant long-term mechanism: the modification of tissue sensitivity to hormones. Some substances do not change the amount of circulating hormone, but rather the way organs respond to it. This can generate hormonal hypersensitivity in some tissues or resistance in others. When these changes occur during key developmental stages, they can persist over time, even when exposure has ceased.
What long-term effects can endocrine disruptors have?
For all these reasons, endocrine disruptors do not usually cause a clear "before and after." There is no specific moment when everything changes. What happens is a progressive imbalance that builds up gradually and is difficult to relate to a specific cause.
Scientific literature has linked this type of interference to an increased risk of reproductive disorders, infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, thyroid disorders, premature puberty, metabolic alterations, and some hormone-dependent cancers. Not as unique causes, but as factors that can contribute to an already vulnerable system losing its balance.

This is where cosmetics inevitably enter the conversation.
Not because every cosmetic product is problematic, or because we should live in fear. But because cosmetics have a very specific characteristic: they are a source of daily, prolonged, and repeated exposure. We are not talking about a one-time product, but about complete routines that are applied every day for years.
Furthermore, they are applied to the skin, which is not an inert barrier, but a living, irrigated organ in constant communication with the inside of the body. From an endocrine perspective, repetition matters as much—or more—than the occasional dose.
That's why this issue is so important today. Because we live in an environment of constant exposure. Because the hormonal system works long-term. And because the effects are not always immediate or easy to identify.
But also because, unlike other environmental factors over which we have little room for action, cosmetics are one of the few elements of daily exposure where we can start making more conscious decisions.
For me, understanding all this was a turning point. Not to try to do everything perfectly or to live in alarm, but to start looking at my health—and what surrounds me—with more respect, more discernment, and more responsibility.
Because when you understand how your hormonal system works, you start asking better questions. And those questions are often the first real step towards more informed, conscious, and long-term sustainable care.
