Blue Light vs. Sun: Which Causes More Oxidation?

1. Introduction: Awakening Awareness

Have you ever stopped to think that every morning you carefully apply your sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, but you overlook an even more present and silent enemy? That enemy is blue light.

Most people associate skin aging with the sun and its ultraviolet rays. However, today we know that blue light (HEV, High Energy Visible light), originating from electronic devices and LED lighting, has an even more intense impact on skin aging.

🔬 Scientific evidence confirms it: a study published in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity (2019) showed that exposure to blue light increases the production of free radicals (ROS) by up to 65% compared to UVA radiation under equivalent conditions.   • However, in our modern lives, we have multiplied exposure through artificial sources:

    • Computer, mobile, tablet and television screens.

🔬 According to a study in Photochemistry and Photobiology (2018), the intensity of blue light emitted by electronic devices is lower than that of the sun, but the duration of daily exposure (8–10 hours in front of screens) makes it a cumulative threat comparable to solar radiation.

Why is it so concerning?

Blue light possesses higher energy than other visible wavelengths (such as green or red). This means that it penetrates deep into the skin, reaching the dermis and affecting structures such as collagen and elastin, key to maintaining facial firmness and elasticity.
