Myth: "perfumes are always toxic."

That’s why, when we hear phrases like "perfumes are toxic" or "fragrances disrupt your hormones," it's natural to feel alarmed. But as is almost always the case in health and cosmetics, the reality is more nuanced: not all perfumes are the same, nor do they all pose the same risk. There are naturally derived fragrances and synthetic fragrances; both share goals (smelling good, lasting, being stable), but they differ in their composition, how they behave on the skin, and what implications they can have for health—including hormonal health, which Banbu places at its core.

Public conversation has been filled with terms like endocrine disruptors, allergens, or persistent compounds, often mixed with alarmist messages or "black or white" simplifications. The result: distrust and confusion. What are perfumes really made of? Is "natural" better by definition? Is synthetic always "bad"? Here lies one of the biggest knots of the problem: labeling. In the ingredient list (INCI), the word "parfum" or "fragrance" can group dozens or even hundreds of substances that are not detailed individually. This umbrella makes it difficult for consumers to know if their cream, shampoo, or deodorant contains specific allergens, potentially problematic fixatives, or molecules they would prefer to avoid. For a brand committed to transparency and hormonal health, like Banbu, this opacity is incompatible with informed decision-making.

It can be composed of a few molecules or hundreds, but it always responds to a very precise art and technique.

2.1 Definition in cosmetics

In cosmetics, the term "fragrance" or "parfum" refers to the mixture of natural or synthetic aromatic substances, usually dissolved in a vehicle (alcohol or oils), which are added to a product to give it a pleasant smell. This mixture is not just there for aesthetics: the aroma influences the user experience, the perception of effectiveness, and even brand loyalty.

2.2 How a perfume is constructed

A perfume is not a single scent, but a layered architecture:

  • Top notes → are what we perceive in the first few seconds (citrus, mint, lavender). They evaporate quickly and create the first impression.

  • Heart notes → are revealed when the initial ones disappear (flowers, spices, fruits). They are the "body" of the fragrance.

  • Base notes → heavier and more persistent (woods, resins, musks). They provide longevity and character.

This olfactive pyramid construction is used in high-end perfumes as well as in a simple shampoo, because it helps to control the sensory experience.

2.3 Brief historical overview

  • Antiquity: The first perfumes were resins, incenses, and essential oils extracted from plants, used in religious rituals or as symbols of status.

  • Middle Ages and Renaissance: Distillation of roses, lavender, and aromatic herbs; birth of artisanal perfumery in Europe.

  • 19th Century: Chemical revolution: the synthesis of aromatic molecules (like vanillin) allowed perfume to be democratized and made accessible, as well as more stable.

  • Today: Coexistence of natural and synthetic. Many fragrances are "mixed": they combine laboratory molecules with essential oils to achieve a balance between cost, stability, and sensory experience.

2.4 Why it matters to understand it

Understanding this basis is key before talking about toxicity or safety. We cannot demonize perfume as a whole: it is necessary to know what it is made of, how it is used, and in what dose. Only then can we differentiate if a product is safe, if it can irritate, or if it contains controversial molecules like endocrine disruptors.
3. Natural vs. synthetic perfumes

Not all perfumes are the same. Although we often see them under the same word —parfum— they can actually come from two main sources: natural or synthetic. Each provides its own characteristics in terms of chemical composition, behavior on the skin, health impact, and sustainability.

3.1 Natural perfumes

Origin:

  • They are extracted directly from nature, especially from plants (flowers, leaves, barks, seeds, resins, roots, fruits).

  • They are obtained by steam distillation, cold pressing, supercritical CO₂ extraction, or natural solvents.

  • Some examples: lavender essential oil, jasmine absolute, benzoin resin.

Chemical composition:

  • They are made up of very complex mixtures of molecules: a rose essential oil can contain more than 300 different components.

  • The composition is never entirely fixed: it changes according to the harvest, climate, part of the plant used, or extraction technique.

Advantages:

  • Olfactory richness: unique nuances, impossible to reproduce 100% in a laboratory.

  • Connection to nature: many people perceive them as more "authentic."

  • Biodegradability: as they come from nature, they degrade more easily in the environment.

Disadvantages:

  • Variability: one batch may differ from another, making standardization in cosmetics difficult.

  • Allergenicity: molecules such as limonene, linalool, or eugenol are natural, but can cause reactions in sensitive skin.

  • Cost and availability: some essential oils are very expensive or require large quantities of raw material (e.g., 4,000 kg of petals for 1 kg of rose essence).

  • Sustainability: the extraction of certain raw materials can lead to the overexploitation of species (such as sandalwood or rosewood).


3.2 Synthetic perfumes

Origin:

  • These are molecules created in a laboratory to imitate natural aromas or generate new scents impossible to find in nature.

  • They are produced on a large scale through controlled chemical processes.

Chemical composition:

  • These are isolated and reproducible molecules. For example, vanillin (the main component of natural vanilla) can be synthesized in pure form, without the hundreds of secondary compounds found in the vanilla bean.

  • They can be combined to build complex perfumes.

Advantages:

  • Stability: they are more resistant to time, light, or heat than many essential oils.

  • Reproducibility: each batch is identical, which facilitates industrial production.

  • Accessibility: lower cost and constant availability.

  • Purity control: impurities present in natural extracts are eliminated.

  • Olfactory innovation: they allow the creation of aromas that do not exist in nature.

Disadvantages:

  • Safety concerns: some families (such as phthalates used as fixatives or certain synthetic musks) have shown effects as endocrine disruptors or bioaccumulation in human tissues.

  • Environmental persistence: some compounds take a long time to degrade and can accumulate in aquatic ecosystems.


3.3 The reality: mixed perfumes

In practice, most current perfumes are hybrids. Essential oils are mixed with synthetic molecules to:

  • Reduce the risk of allergenicity (e.g., lower the concentration of a strong essential oil and reinforce it with supporting molecules).

    4. The Big Problem: "Parfum" in INCI

    If you read the ingredient list of almost any cosmetic product—a cream, a deodorant, a shower gel—you will eventually see the word "parfum" or, in English, "fragrance." And therein lies the trap: this word hides a catch-all term that can include anything from a lavender essential oil to over 100 different synthetic chemical substances, without the consumer being able to know exactly what they are.


    4.1 What does "parfum" really mean?

    • According to cosmetic regulations, "parfum" is the generic term encompassing all aromatic substances (natural, synthetic, or mixed) used in a product.

    • It is not mandatory for the manufacturer to declare all these substances one by one, with some specific exceptions.

    • Consequently, a shampoo with “parfum” in its INCI may contain both safe, neutral molecules and potential endocrine disruptors or allergens, and the consumer has no tools to differentiate them.


    4.2 Health consequences

    • Inability to identify allergens: someone sensitive to linalool, eugenol, or limonene cannot know if they are present, unless the brand voluntarily chooses to declare them.

    • Lack of transparency in endocrine disruptors: compounds like phthalates (often used as fragrance fixatives) are hidden under the word “parfum.”

    • Cumulative risk: although the dose in a single product is low, when using deodorant, cream, makeup, and gel every day, exposure multiplies.

    • Invisibility for the informed consumer: even people who want to avoid certain molecules cannot do so, because the label does not specify it.


    4.3 Regulatory comparison

    • Europe: requires 26 fragrance allergens to be indicated in the INCI when they exceed a minimum concentration. Examples: geraniol, citral, coumarin. Even so, this is only a partial list: there are more than 3,000 aromatic molecules used in perfumery.

    • United States: the FDA allows everything to be grouped under “fragrance” without breakdown. The level of opacity is even higher than in Europe.

    • Trends: some countries and consumer organizations demand an expansion of the mandatory allergen list and greater detail in fragrance composition.


    4.4 The effect on the consumer

    • Feeling of helplessness: one wants to choose consciously, but the information is not available.

    • Loss of brand trust: when everything appears under the same term, consumers perceive that something is being hidden from them.

    • Barrier to hormonal health: those who wish to avoid endocrine disruptors cannot make informed decisions.


    4.5 Practical example

    Imagine two creams:

    • Cream A: contains sweet orange essential oil with limonene, declared as “parfum.”

    • Cream B: contains a mixture of synthetic musks and phthalates, also under “parfum.”
      On the label, both look exactly the same: just one word. But the implications for health and the environment are completely different.


    4.6 The core of the problem

    The dilemma is not so much whether the perfume is natural or synthetic, but the legal opacity that allows everything to be grouped into one word. This lack of clarity prevents people from making responsible choices and hinders trust in cosmetics.

      • Ethoxylated compounds (such as PEGs).

    5.3 Specific risk cases when there is no certification

    1. Endocrine disruptors

    • Example: phthalates, used as fixatives in conventional fragrances.

    • Effects: hormonal alteration, fertility, reproductive development.

    • Certification: completely prohibited in certified natural and organic cosmetics.

    2. Allergens

    • Example: limonene, linalool, eugenol.

    • Key note: these are natural, not synthetic, but can cause skin reaction.

    • Certification: their use is allowed only in safe concentrations and with mandatory declaration in the INCI.

    3. Persistent compounds

    • Even so, natural perfumes can contain allergens; hence the importance of them being regulated and correctly declared.


    5.5 Summary

    • Yes, some conventional perfumes can be problematic (phthalates, persistent musks, opaque labeling).
