Are all perfumes harmful to our health?

Are all perfumes harmful to our health?

In your quest to reduce toxins in the cosmetics you use, you've probably often heard how harmful added perfumes in cosmetic products can be. But is that really the case? Are all perfumes detrimental to our health? Before drawing conclusions, let's delve a little deeper into the subject, starting with the basics: what is perfume?

What is perfume?

Perfume is a mixture of aromatic substances used to add fragrance to cosmetic products, skin, or the environment. These substances can be of natural or synthetic origin, and their primary function is to provide a pleasant olfactory experience. Perfumes are present in a wide variety of products, from creams to detergents, bath gels, and makeup.

Natural vs. Synthetic Perfumes

There are two types of perfumes used in the cosmetic industry: natural perfumes and synthetic perfumes. Understanding their differences is key to evaluating their potential effects on our health.

Natural Perfumes

Natural perfumes are made using plant-based ingredients or, in some cases, animal-based ingredients. These include essential oils extracted from flowers, fruits, leaves, bark, and roots. The way these oils are obtained varies: they can be extracted through distillation, cold pressing, or maceration in vegetable oils. All these methods have something in common: they are manual and ecological processes that do not involve aggressive chemicals.

One of the most valued aspects of natural perfumes is their purity. Being composed solely of natural ingredients, their impact on health is lower compared to synthetics. Furthermore, their fragrances tend to be more complex and dynamic, changing over time and reacting uniquely to each skin type. This provides a richer and more personalized olfactory experience.

Synthetic Perfumes

Synthetic perfumes, on the other hand, are produced in laboratories using chemical compounds that mimic natural aromas or create entirely new fragrances. The industry uses these perfumes for several reasons: they are cheaper to produce, more stable, and offer a wider range of aromas than natural ones. However, this is where the controversy arises.

One of the main concerns with synthetic perfumes is their potential toxicity. Many cosmetic products list "parfum" or "fragrance" in their ingredients, but behind that seemingly harmless word can hide hundreds of chemical compounds that are not detailed. Companies are not obliged to break down the components of "parfum" due to trade secret laws, which means we don't know exactly what chemical ingredients we are applying to our skin.

Some of the most common compounds in synthetic perfumes include phthalates, parabens, and synthetic musks, which have been linked to adverse effects such as hormonal disruption, skin irritation, and respiratory problems. This lack of transparency and the use of potentially dangerous chemical substances is what raises concern about synthetic perfumes in cosmetic products.

Production of Natural Perfumes

Obtaining a natural perfume is a process that is much more respectful of the environment and human health. The main methods include:

  1. Steam Distillation: The most traditional and common method. Plants are heated with steam, which allows their essential oils to be extracted.

  2. Cold Pressing: Used primarily to obtain essential oils from citrus fruits, where the fruit peels are pressed to release their aromas.

  3. Maceration: In this process, flowers or herbs are submerged in vegetable oils to slowly release their fragrances. It is a more artisanal and delicate method.

The main advantage of these methods is that the resulting essential oils do not contain synthetic chemicals or additives, making them safer and more ecological options.

Olfactory Differences between Natural and Synthetic Perfumes

From an olfactory point of view, the difference between a natural and a synthetic perfume is remarkable. Natural perfumes usually have a softer and more complex aroma. In a natural perfume, several layers of fragrance can be perceived, developing over time and interacting uniquely with each person's skin pH.

In contrast, synthetic perfumes tend to be more intense and often more "linear," meaning their scent does not change much over time. These perfumes tend to be longer-lasting, but often lack the richness and depth that characterize natural fragrances.

How to identify a natural perfume? The importance of external certification

Distinguishing a natural perfume from a synthetic one is not an easy task, especially when relying on the ingredient list on product packaging. Manufacturers typically only indicate the generic term "parfum" or "fragrance," which can refer to a combination of natural ingredients, synthetic ones, or even a mix of both. This broad term hides the true origin of the substances used, as there is no legal obligation to break down the specific components of a fragrance. Due to this lack of transparency, many consumers assume that all perfumes added to cosmetics are harmful, which is not always true. However, without clear details on the label, it's impossible to know for sure whether the perfume in question is completely natural or composed of synthetic chemicals.

This information gap has led to synthetic perfumes, which often contain potentially harmful ingredients like phthalates or synthetic musks, generating distrust. These ingredients have been associated with adverse health effects, such as hormonal disruptions or allergies, reinforcing the general negative perception of perfumes. Therefore, the only real way to guarantee that a perfume is natural and toxin-free is through external certification granted by an independent and recognized entity in the cosmetic industry.

Certifications like COSMOS, one of the strictest and most prestigious worldwide, ensure that the product meets very high standards of purity, safety, and sustainability. To obtain this certification, products must be formulated with natural, organic ingredients produced sustainably. Additionally, COSMOS verifies that no toxic or potentially dangerous substances for human health or the environment are used. At Banbu Cosmética Natural, all our products are endorsed by this certifier, ensuring that our fragrances are 100% natural, safe, and respectful of both your well-being and the planet.

Therefore, next time you want to make sure a perfume is truly natural, beyond reading the ingredient list, look for certification seals like COSMOS, which guarantee the transparency and quality you need to care for your skin and the environment.
