Sunspots on the skin: what they are and how to avoid them

by Verónica Díez Lantarón on Jun 09, 2026
Manchas solares en la piel: qué son y cómo evitarlas

Sunspots are one of the most common concerns when it comes to skin care. Although many people only associate them with aging, the reality is that cumulative sun exposure is one of the main factors responsible for their appearance.

Although these small areas of hyperpigmentation usually develop gradually, one of the main causes of their appearance is the accumulated damage caused by sun exposure over the years. The body's defense mechanism to protect itself is to increase melanin production, which can affect skin tone. The problem arises when melanin production stops being uniform and leads to darker spots.

The good news is that many of these spots can be prevented and reduced with adequate protection and conscious daily habits. In this article, you will discover what sunspots are, why they appear, and how to prevent them to maintain more uniform and healthier skin.

What are sunspots?

Sunspots, also known as solar lentigines, are small areas where the skin has become darker. This is due to an excessive accumulation of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for skin color, in certain areas.

Their appearance does not mean there is any skin disease; the cause of their appearance is usually prolonged sun exposure and is considered a sign of photoaging. The body areas that are usually most exposed to the sun and the effects of its radiation are the face, arms, or shoulders, and therefore these spots tend to appear more in these places.

When we are directly exposed to the sun, our body increases melanin production as a defense mechanism against ultraviolet radiation. However, with the passage of years and repeated exposure, this production can become irregular and lead to darker spots than the rest of the skin.

Normally, the presence of these spots increases with age, and they usually develop and become more visible by the age of 40-50. They can also appear in young people who have accumulated many hours of sun exposure or who have not used adequate protection, although this is less common.

Why do sunspots appear?

As we have mentioned, the main cause is cumulative exposure to UV rays, but there are also other factors that can favor their appearance. After a certain age, it is usually common, but its effects can be reduced by using the right products.

Every time the skin receives UV rays, its internal mechanisms of melanin production are activated, and in areas like the face, where it is inevitably more exposed to the sun, more pigment than necessary is produced, thus leading to the appearance of spots.

One of the reasons why this process accelerates is the lack of sun protection. Not using sunscreen regularly significantly increases the risk of developing hyperpigmentation, especially in areas like the face, where exposure is practically daily.

With the passage of years, the skin also loses its ability to regulate the even distribution of melanin. Therefore, it is usually more common for spots to appear at ages like 40 or 50.

Another determining factor in the development of this skin condition is hormonal changes during stages such as pregnancy or menopause, as they can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun.

Finally, some people have a greater genetic tendency to develop hyperpigmentation. For these people, spots can appear more easily, even if sun exposure levels are moderate.

Different types of spots

There are various types of spots, all caused by factors including an excess of pigmentation in the skin. The most common are the following:

  • Solar Lentigines: these are the most common sunspots. They are usually circular and dark, and appear due to accumulated sun radiation over the years.
  • Freckles: they have a significant hereditary component and appear from childhood. Although not sunspots, prolonged sun exposure can make them darker and more visible.
  • Melasma: these are spots that usually appear on the lips or cheeks, and are related to both sun exposure damage and hormonal factors.

How to prevent sunspots?

Prevention is the most effective strategy to maintain uniform skin and prevent new spots from appearing. There are habits that can help slow their appearance.

The most important thing is to protect the skin from the sun. UV radiation is present throughout the year, and is especially dangerous in summer if you are going to be exposed to the sun for long periods.

It is recommended to use effective protection, with a mineral filter and SPF50. At Banbu, we have sunscreens for adults and children, all formulated with skin-friendly ingredients.

It is very important to check the INCI of sunscreens, as many of them contain ingredients that are toxic and can act as endocrine disruptors, altering the proper functioning of the body's hormonal system and making this type of spot appear more easily.  By using Banbu products, you are also protecting your body's overall health.

Can spots be removed?

Once spots have appeared, their complete removal is not always easy. However, there are different strategies that can help reduce their intensity and improve the overall appearance of the skin.

There are products designed to correct spots and achieve a more uniform complexion. Ingredients such as natural extracts of Ginseng, Apple, Peach, Wheat and Barley, and Bellis Perennis extract help to reduce spots and create a brightening effect on the face.

Banbu's Oasis serum helps precisely to reduce the signs of aging, including uneven tone. With its constant application, it attenuates hyperpigmentation and prevents photoaging.

Another recommendation for reducing spots is to always perform a facial cleanse. Facial cleansing is one of the most important steps in a skincare routine, and it is necessary to purify the skin and ensure that the active ingredients of subsequent products penetrate better.

Protect your skin from the sun as it deserves

Sunspots are a common consequence of cumulative sun exposure, but to a large extent they can be prevented through simple and consistent habits.

Incorporating daily sun protection, using cosmetics formulated with respectful ingredients, and maintaining a consistent facial care routine can help you prevent photoaging and keep your skin more even, luminous, and healthy for longer.

Using sunscreen becomes necessary to protect the face and body skin. Its application is essential if you know you will be spending the day outdoors. Protect yourself from ultraviolet radiation and prevent its damage by using the best sunscreens, formulated with the best ingredients.
