Toxins in shampoos: What you should know about their ingredients

by Verónica Díez Lantarón on Mar 20, 2025
Los tóxicos en los champús: Lo que debes saber sobre sus ingredientes

We are increasingly aware of what we apply to our skin and hair, but when it comes to choosing a truly healthy shampoo, we encounter a major obstacle: labels are full of chemical terms that are difficult to understand.

Brands use claims like "sulfate-free," "paraben-free," or "natural," but the reality is that many times these products contain other equally problematic ingredients. So, how can we tell if a shampoo is really safe? What ingredients should we avoid and how do we identify them in the INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients)?

We will explore the most controversial ingredients in shampoos, understand their function, the risks they can pose to our health, and what alternatives exist for healthy, toxic-free hair.

1. Sulfates: Are they really bad or does it depend on the type?

Sulfates are surfactants, meaning they are responsible for removing dirt and excess oil from the scalp. They are also the ingredients that generate abundant foam in commercial shampoos. But, although many shampoos pride themselves on being labeled "sulfate-free," not all sulfates are harmful.

Some synthetic sulfates can be too aggressive, removing not only dirt but also the natural oils that protect the scalp, which can lead to dryness, irritation, and even a rebound effect in oily hair. Additionally, certain sulfates can be contaminated with potentially toxic byproducts, such as 1,4-dioxane, a compound classified as a possible carcinogen.

Among the most problematic sulfates are:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)

These ingredients are usually found in the ingredient list of shampoos with the endings "-sulfate" or "-sulfonate."

However, not all sulfates are harmful. There are milder and safer alternatives, derived from natural sources, that effectively cleanse without damaging the hair fiber or irritating the scalp.

Some safer options include:

  • Sodium Coco-Sulfate (SCS): a coconut oil-derived sulfate, milder and less irritating.
  • Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate: a surfactant derived from plant amino acids, ideal for sensitive skin.
  • Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate: a biodegradable cleanser that is more respectful of the scalp.

The key difference between natural and synthetic sulfates lies in their origin and aggressiveness. While synthetics usually come from petroleum and have a greater irritating potential, natural ones are derived from vegetable oils and are milder.

To identify them in the INCI, it is helpful to look for keywords: the most aggressive sulfates usually have the prefix "Lauryl" or "Laureth", while milder ones include terms like "Coco", "Glutamate" or "Sarcosinate".

2. Silicones: the deceptive shine

Silicones are another very common ingredient in shampoos and conditioners. They are used to give hair a softer and shinier appearance, but they often only provide a superficial aesthetic improvement.

Silicones can build up over time, creating a barrier that prevents hair from absorbing real moisture. This can cause hair to become dull, heavy, and more prone to breakage.

Among the most common and difficult-to-remove silicones are:

  • Dimethicone
  • Cyclopentasiloxane
  • Amodimethicone

These usually appear in the INCI with endings "-cone", "-siloxane" or "-conol".

Fortunately, there are safer alternatives for those who want silky hair without resorting to synthetic silicones. These include:

  • Vegetable oils such as argan, coconut, or jojoba, which provide real shine and nourishment.
  • Phytokeratin and vegetable proteins, which strengthen hair from within.

If you are looking for beautiful and healthy hair in the long term, it is better to opt for natural ingredients that truly nourish the hair fiber.

3. Parabens: preservatives under scrutiny

Parabens are preservatives widely used in the cosmetic industry to prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi. However, in recent years there has been much debate about their safety due to their potential as endocrine disruptors.

Studies have shown that some parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, which could alter hormonal balance and be related to problems such as infertility or the development of certain types of cancer.

The most common parabens in shampoos are:

  • Methylparaben
  • Propylparaben
  • Butylparaben

To identify them in the INCI, simply look for the suffix "-paraben".

There are safer alternatives to preserve products without health risks:

  • Benzoic acid and its salts (Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Benzoate).
  • Potassium sorbate (Potassium Sorbate).
  • Botanical extracts with antimicrobial properties, such as radish root ferment filtrate (Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate).

Conclusion: choose a safe and conscious shampoo

In a market saturated with products that promise wonders, it is essential to learn how to read labels and differentiate between safe ingredients and those that can harm our hair health in the long term.

💡 Key tips for choosing a healthy shampoo:
✔ Avoid aggressive sulfates like SLS and SLES, and opt for milder alternatives like SCS.
✔ Steer clear of non-soluble silicones that only provide a superficial improvement.
✔ Look for natural preservatives instead of parabens.
✔ Prefer natural fragrances and colorants instead of synthetic ones.
