The Odyssey: finding an aluminum-free deodorant

by Atención al cliente on Mar 19, 2024
El aluminio, aquél enemigo que nadie quiere tener cerca, pero que está en todas partes. Tira a la basura tu desodorante con aluminio.

The only aluminum we should consume is that which is naturally found in our food daily. If we consume products containing it (or any of its variants), we would be overloading our bodies, leading to a risk of "intoxication," also known as the "Cocktail Effect." We'll tell you what you need to know to definitively get rid of all the products you use that are harming you.

You surely know that cosmetics often prioritize results over people's health. Commercial deodorants, those you've been buying your whole life and whose labels you've just glanced at because you only recognized alcohol and water, contain toxic substances in their formulas that appear to be beneficial. All these compounds are responsible for how your body functions.

What is the endocrine system?

Our metabolism, reproduction, and other natural functions are regulated by the endocrine system, a set of hormones secreted by the glands that form it: the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, pineal gland, thyroid gland, thymus, adrenal gland, pancreas, and ovaries and testes.

All of these are deceived by toxic chemicals that mimic their function, leading to an imbalance and poor execution of the natural processes our body undergoes.

The hormones affected by endocrine disruptors are also responsible for your sweat glands secreting much more sweat and causing bad odor. And this is not some pious enlightenment; it's simply understanding how the endocrine system works and how these toxins we consume daily affect it.

What toxic substances do deodorants usually contain?

It's curious that with the regulation of chemical use in production in the EU (European Union), full attention is paid to the health of workers, but not to consumers. It is required that all chemical substances manufactured or imported into the EU be registered and that manufacturers and importers systematically assess the risks these may pose.

The regulation is called REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) and advocates for the protection of people and the environment against the use of toxic substances. There are already up to 12,000 different ones registered, present in approximately 74% of consumer products. And yet, it is expected that between 4,000 and 7,000 could remain outside regulation by 2030.

Of all these, the most prevalent in the market are:

  • Aluminum or aluminum chlorohydrate: it has been shown to significantly influence DNA, modifying its biological activity.
  • Parabens: the most common are butylparaben, methylparaben, and propylparaben, very harmful endocrine disruptors for our health.
  • Triclosan: also an endocrine disruptor, which is not identified as a paraben. Although it is directly communicated that it is paraben-free, it is likely that it does contain this. It is added to the deodorant formula for its bactericidal properties.
  • Dimethicone, silicone, or PDMS: petroleum derivatives that are very dangerous for health and a major pollutant in the environment. Currently, only two types of silicones, D4 and D5, are prohibited.
  • Phthalates: other disruptors that are very important to avoid. They are usually referenced with the acronyms DBP (dibutyl phthalate), DEP (diethyl phthalate), or "parfum."

One of the modifications made in 2023 called for the correct communication of product ingredients. But what good is it that they tell us a cream contains a toxic substance while informing us with scientific names? They are taking advantage of the lack of quality information regarding these important issues in a historical situation where the development of diseases (rare and normal) is constantly increasing.

But how does aluminum affect me?

Aluminum salts remain in our bloodstream 15 days after being used on the skin. José Antonio Villegas, a doctor of medicine, assures that the dermal route is the most direct in terms of absorption, so the use of antiperspirants and deodorants with aluminum can produce cancerous cells. However, it is not 100% proven due to the lack of studies on its negative impact.

Even so, with the limited information we have on the subject, it has been concluded that it does affect our health by generating imbalances that can develop in our bodies:

  • Breast cancer: There is some concern about the use of deodorants with aluminum and their possible link to an increased risk of developing breast cancer. Some studies have found traces of aluminum in breast tissue of breast cancer patients, which has led to speculation about whether aluminum could contribute to the development of the disease. However, the scientific evidence is limited and inconclusive.
  • Neurodegenerative diseases: The possible connection between aluminum exposure and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's has been investigated. Although some studies have found elevated levels of aluminum in the brains of people with Alzheimer's, a direct causal relationship between aluminum and this disease has not yet been established. Research on this topic is still ongoing.
  • Hormonal disorders: Aluminum can have disruptive effects on the endocrine system, which regulates hormones in the body. Some studies have suggested that aluminum could interfere with normal hormonal balance, although the magnitude and extent of these effects are not yet clear.
